'FL3TCH3R Exhibit' calling for 2021 exhibition entries | News

Entries are sought for the 2021 “FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social & Politically Engaged Art,” which will be held at East Tennessee State University’s Reece Museum from Oct. 4-Dec. 10.
This annual exhibit continues to represent the spirit of social and political movements of the country and world.
“There will be no general theme for entries except a focus on social and politically engaged artworks,” say co-directors Barb, Wayne and Carrie Dyer, who established the exhibition in memory of Fletcher Dyer, a senior ETSU art and design student who was in a fatal motorcycle accident in 2009.
“However, this year’s exhibit will especially honor ‘Protection of Voting Rights,’ and continues this year to honor ‘Black Lives Matter.’ ” ....

Paintings by Christian Rieben, Joy McGinnis on display at Reece Museum

Two exhibitions of paintings are on display at the Reece Museum of East Tennessee State University — one by art professor Christian Rieben and another by Johnson City artist Joy McGinnis.
“Folly: recent work by Christian Rieben” is on exhibit through July 2, and “Moments of Illumination” by McGinnis continues through July 30. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special Sunday hours will be held on June 6 and July 11 from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free.
In “Folly,” Rieben, a visiting assistant professor in ETSU’s Department of Art and Design, paints a world where whimsy and tragedy cohabitate—where Lewis Carroll meets Carl Jung, and the bluebells toll for thee. Overall, Rieben says his work could be divided into two categories — those politically motivated and not politically motivated. ....

New online magazine to continue ETSU's Appalachian literary tradition | Entertainment

The East Tennessee State University Appalachian Studies program is set to launch an online magazine later this spring. Appalachian Places will continue the program’s long literary tradition of highlighting the people, places, issues and themes relating to the Appalachian region.
The new magazine will help continue that tradition by following the example of its print-version forerunner, Now & Then magazine, which, with the exception of a two-year hiatus in the early 2000s, ran from 1984 until it ceased publication in 2017.
“For nearly 30 years, the ETSU Appalachian Studies program published a high-quality print magazine devoted to our region,” said Dr. Ron Roach, chair of Appalachian Studies and director of the Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services. “After much planning and preparation, I am so pleased that we are preparing to launch a new, digital publication that will continue this part of our mission.” ....
