Vaccinations Begin For Arizona Kids 12 To 15 Years Old


Some Arizona pharmacy locations started vaccinations for 12- to 15-year-olds on May 12, 2021.
Children 12 to 15 years old can now be vaccinated against COVID-19 in Arizona. The Pfizer vaccine got federal approval this week for younger teens, and pediatricians are encouraging parents to sign their kids up.
Even though COVID-19 is most dangerous for older adults, it poses a threat to children too, said Dr. Ruben Espinoza, a pediatrician with Banner Health. 
“There’s still a possibility, especially for older teenagers, to get complications and to get severe post-COVID or long-COVID, Espinoza said. Problems with their heart, problems with their joints, they can have longstanding fatigue.” ....

Arts Beat: Santa Maria sees public art boom

There’s a public art boom going on in Santa Maria. It includes brightly painted utility boxes and murals celebrating the town’s culture and heritage.
Dennis Smitherman, who oversees public art for the Santa Maria Department of Recreation and Parks, said art is on the rise in the city. He coordinates the Utility Box Art project, which features the work of local artists on the city’s utility boxes with themes of Santa Maria.
The Box Art project began in 2017 and, to date, utility boxes are painted with strawberries, wildflowers, dancers, wine, and more. The newest phase of the project is now in progress. ....

5 new faculty join ASU's Department of English, Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies

This fall, Arizona State University’s Department of English and Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies will welcome five new faculty members who will work toward the center’s mission of enabling and promoting the most expansive, creative and daring scholarship in medieval and renaissance studies. 
This hiring initiative was led by Ayanna Thompson, director of the center and a Regents Professor in the Department of English, in an effort to elevate scholars of color working on issues of race in premodern studies.
