Westminster had plenty of warning that America was coming for Britain’s betting industry. In a last-ditch appeal, Roger Devlin, chairman of William Hill, wrote to Theresa May, cautioning her over the consequences of a crackdown on fixed-odds betting terminals.
Cutting maximum stakes to £2 would be “catastrophic” for the betting industry, he warned the then Prime Minister. “Consolidation within our sector continues and I would also not want to see the impact of a disproportionate. outcome being a factor in the name of William Hill being added to the list of companies now in foreign ownership.” ....

Gambling powerhouse Flutter Entertainment this week closed a previously announced $4.2 billion deal to lift its stake in US sports betting and daily fantasy sports firm FanDuel to 95%.
Flutter merged its US operations with FanDuel in 2018. The Irish gambling giant announced in early December that it would exercise an option ahead of previously agreed July 2023 schedule to buy a 37.2% stake in FanDuel.
The deal was a combination of cash and stock. Flutter raised
£1.1 billion from investors, including Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Corporation, to partly fund the purchase.
The stake the gambling operator just bought was previously owned by the Fastball Holdings consortium of investors led by private equity firm KKR. The remaining 5% stake in FanDuel will be ....
