The Manhattan Beach City Council on Tuesday night sent proposed new language for plaques at Bruce’s Beach back to the History Advisory Committee, a group of residents tasked with providing a more accurate telling of what occurred when racially-motivated city leaders in the 1920s utilized the power of eminent domain to condemn the property.  ....

Since as far back as the days of Garbo, Bogey, and the old Red Car trolley line, affordable housing in Los Angeles has typically meant one thing: new houses, most likely built in some previously undeveloped patch of dust and chaparral. There have always been apartments, of course in particular the midcentury dingbat type, hoisted atop thin pilot is and here and there a smattering of postwar public housing projects. Yet by and large, the area has remained the poster child for all-American sprawl, countering rising real estate costs by letting private developers follow the freeways, littering single-family homes along the way.  ....

By the first years of the 1920s, Manhattan Beach was coming together. In the decade since its founding, what had been mostly a scattering of sandswept shacks emerged as an actual town. A city hall was built and residents approved bonds to construct both a waterworks and a pier with a distinctive octagonal roundhouse at its end. The city’s population had increased, albeit modestly, from 600 people to almost 900. But one particular segment of the population was growing in a way that some people in the city found concerning.  ....
