Giles named new beach patrol captain
Rehoboth Beach announced Jan. 28 that Jeffrey Giles, a 30-year veteran of the Delaware State Police, has been named as the new beach patrol captain.
Giles, a Delaware native, held several DSP leadership positions, including supervising the maritime and scuba units. He also served on the safety committee for the annual Special Olympics Delaware Lewes Polar Bear Plunge that takes place in Rehoboth Beach.
Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks said Giles served five summers as a member of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, including as a lieutenant, before he was with the state police. ....

Rehoboth hires state police veteran as Beach Patrol captain


Giles starts Feb. 1 and will be supervised by Banks. City Manager Sharon Lynn delegated the job to Banks when the pandemic began. It was the first time a Rehoboth Beach Patrol captain had been supervised by anyone other than the city manager in Rehoboth.
Kent Buckson, Rehoboth s beach patrol captain of 21 years, resigned Dec. 18 due to the change. He said it wasn t a good fit and claimed it was a violation of the city charter. He filed an appeal with the city commissioners, but they declined to hear his complaint.
A few weeks later, the city solicitor presented a plan to change the charter to the commissioners. It would clarify the city manager s ability to delegate supervisory powers freely. ....

Jeffrey Giles will begin his position as Rehoboth Beach Patrol captain Feb. 1.
Rehoboth Beach has hired a Delaware State Police veteran as its new lifeguard captain. 
During Jeffrey Giles 30-year state police career, he served on the safety committee for the annual Special Olympics Delaware Lewes Polar Bear Plunge in Rehoboth and supervised the state police maritime and scuba units, according to a press release from the city. 
“Mr. Giles is already familiar with the City of Rehoboth Beach,” says Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks. “Besides being familiar with our events, such as the Special Olympics, he served five summers as a member of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, including as a lieutenant, before he was with the state police. ....

Rehoboth Beach Hires New Beach Patrol Captain


A 30-year veteran of Delaware State Police will become the new Rehoboth Beach Patrol Captain.
The city Thursday announced the hiring of Jeffrey Giles. Giles had previous experience with the Beach Patrol, including as a lieutenant, before he was with State Police. With State Police, his responsibilities including supervision of the Maritime and Scuba units.
Giles replaces former longtime Beach Patrol Captain Kent Buckson, who resigned last month after an apparent disagreement with the city manager.
“Mr. Giles is already familiar with the City of Rehoboth Beach,” Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks said. “Besides being familiar with our events, such as the Special Olympics, he served five summers as a member of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, including as a lieutenant, before he was with the State Police. As inauguration nears, safety top priority in Rehoboth Beach

In the months since Joe Biden won the presidential election, Rehoboth Beach has been thrust onto the international stage.
Generally speaking, the limelight has been good – news networks from across the globe have set up shop near the Boardwalk. However, as the Jan. 6 events that took place in the U.S. Capitol show, there’s a possibility the light will also attract unwanted attention.
That possibility isn’t lost on Mayor Stan Mills or the Rehoboth Beach Police Department. During an interview Jan. 10, Mills said he watched the Jan. 6 events unfold live on TV.
