he Delta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® located in Petersburg, VA has become the first chapter in the Commonwealth of Virginia to have a historical marker recognizing the significance of the graduate chapter itself, not an individual person or member.
The Board of Historical Resources met virtually on December 10, 2020, to vote to approve the historical veracity of several marker proposals. Delta Omega’s marker was included among six submissions in the Diversity Marker category. After a comprehensive process that began during the summer of 2020, the chapter realized a dream that had been a part of its almost 100-year history. ....

Delta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha gets historic marker

ETTRICK - The oldest Greek-lettered sorority for Black women in the country is being recognized by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources with a historical Highway Marker.
Chartered in 1921, the Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa is the fourth oldest graduate chapter in AKA s history and the oldest chapter in the Mid-Atlantic region. It is the first full AKA chapter in Virginia to be recognized by a marker. The national sorority serves over 300,000 women in over 1,000 chapters.
VDHR s Board of Historic Resources approved the marker on Dec. 10 after a four month process validating historical accuracy, historical significance and language use of the marker. It was approved alongside five others in the section of Diversity. ....
