After record snow fall combined with months of limited capacity due to COVID-19 protocols, most local ski resorts are planning for an extended season in 2021 so more people can make it up to the mountains.
Stevens Pass announced that its season has extended through April 18, 2021. Masks are still required in all aspects of pass operations, “regardless of mandates in your home state or your vaccination status.” Reservations are required to manage on-mountain access.
Crystal Mountain will continue to operate daily until April 18, and will be open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until May 9. Reservations for the extended ski and snowboard season open April 1. ....

The coronavirus has impacted nearly every type of business in both direct and indirect ways this past year, and local ski resorts are no exception.
Mount Baker Ski Area, Stevens Pass, and Crystal Mountain all report that getting outside into the fresh air of the mountains has been a lifeline for people during quarantine. The fact that skiing and snowboarding are individual sports done on a mountain slope make them an ideal socially distanced activity for many in the Pacific Northwest with quarantine fatigue. ....

The Bellingham Herald
1/13/2021
Robert Mittendorf, The Bellingham Herald (Bellingham, Wash.)
Jan. 13 Winds gusting well past 50 mph knocked out electricity across a broad area of the Puget Sound region, according to the National Weather Service and Puget Sound Energy.
At least one person was injured in Whatcom County when trees crashed into a dorm at Western Washington University, campus officials said Tuesday night, Jan. 12.
Commuters were urged to drive cautiously, especially in the predawn darkness, because of debris and water over roadways.
Much of Birch Bay Drive was closed because of high water from seasonal king tides, said John Gargett, deputy director of the Whatcom County Sheriff s Office Division of Emergency Management. ....

The National Weather Service says Thursday is expected to be a “fairly nice day” with morning fog.
But thousands of people across the Puget Sound region are still without power after a strong windstorm ripped across the area late Tuesday night.
Before sunrise on Wednesday, over 300,000 people had lost power, prompting school districts to cancel or delay online classes. Outages were largely driven by high winds and saturated soil, causing heavy trees and branches to come down on power lines. Winds died down by late morning and the sun made an appearance. ....

'It could have turned bad real easy,' after man lost in Whatcom County back country

BELLINGHAM — A near tragedy in the Whatcom County back country was averted when members of the Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council managed to find and lead a splitboarder who became lost near Artist Point to safety Sunday evening.
It was a great outcome, Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council s Chuck Foster told The Bellingham Herald. It could have turned bad real easy, because he didn t have long when we found him.
Despite Sunday s happy outcome, Foster said everyone who heads out into the back country this winter should take some valuable lessons from the experience.
Bellingham Mountain Rescue received notification at approximately 5:30 p.m. Dec. 27 of a man who had become lost while splitboarding — a snowboard that can be separated into two ski-like halves and used to climb in back country settings — outside the Mt. Baker Ski Area near Artist Point, Foster reported. ....
