A Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) government would hold publicly televised hearings into the affairs at Bahamas Power and Light (BPL), PLP Leader Philip Brave Davis said yesterday.
“There has been one bad decision after another at BPL and it has cost the Bahamian people dearly,” said Davis, who served as former minister of works with responsibility with BPL.
“There is no accountability; there is no transparency.
“The Rate Reduction Bond will add more to our electricity bill, and there appears to be no plan to reduce the cost of electricity to absorb that. ....

Regulator: BPL won't make consumers pay for 'failures'

Energy regulators have renewed their pledge to ensure Bahamas Power & Light (BPL) does not make consumers pay for its failures through an opaque, inflated fuel charge on their bills.
The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA), in its just-released 2021 draft annual plan, nevertheless praised the state-owned utility for introducing a fuel hedging initiative to stabilise the fuel charge and give businesses and households certainty over this component of their bills.
Suggesting that BPL had substantially adopted the recommendations it provided over its fuel hedging plans, URCA added that the advice it also provided over the upcoming $535m Rate Reduction Bond (RRB) placement should be revisited given that much has changed since the issue was first proposed due to COVID-19. ....

Bahamas Power & Light s (BPL) chairman yesterday said it has extended fuel cost certainty for all consumers until end-2023 to help ease the extra charge that will be added to their bills in the New Year.
Dr Donovan Moxey told Tribune Business the state-owned utility had extended its fuel hedging strategy by a further 23 months through to the beginning of 2024 to help mitigate the impact from the National Utility Investment Charge (NUIC) that all customers will first see on their light bills in early 2021. ....
