Former Alabama Insurance Commissioner Mike Weaver Dies at 70

Mike Weaver, who served as Alabama Insurance Commissioner under Gov. Guy Hunt from 1988 to 1993, passed away Sunday after an extended illness. He was 70.
Weaver was a longtime resident of Randolph County, a graduate of Randolph County High School and Auburn University. For 28 years he was owner of Weaver and Associates Insurance Consultants.
From 1973 until 1988, Weaver was involved in various positions in the life insurance industry, ending as regional underwriting manager for reinsurance in the Southeast Region for American United Life in their Atlanta office.

In 1988, he was named Alabama’s Insurance Commissioner where he organized, supervised, and administered the Alabama Department of Insurance for nearly five years. ....

County board adjusts post-holiday schedule


WEDOWEE - At last Thursday s Randolph County Board of Education meeting, it was agreed that the when school goes back into session after the holidays, the first week of January will be virtual for students and on-site for faculty and staff.
Students will return to face-to-face instruction on Monday, Jan. 11. Due to the current increase in COVID-19 cases statewide, Randolph County Schools will remain on a four-day schedule through at least Friday, Jan. 22.
In a related matter, all extracurricular activities, including athletic events, have been cancelled through Jan. 10. At this time activities may resume on Monday, Jan. 11. Further adjustments will be made as needed according to Superintendent John Jacobs. ....

Roanoke School Board approves bid on work at schools


At their last meeting of the year last week, Roanoke School Board approved a bid for roofing projects at Handley High and Knight-Enloe Elementary schools.
The board received six bids on the project and accepted the bid from Alabama Roofing in Anniston in the amount of $495,000. The work will begin as soon as possible and will be completed soon, weather permitting. Superintendent Chuck Marcum said the projects are being paid for out of the state bond money approved this year.

The past few years, the Alabama High School Athletic Association has had four honorary captains from each participating school to go on the field for the coin toss. Handley decided in 2016 and 2020 to have one teacher to represent KES, one to represent Handley Middle School and two to represent HHS.
