NOT FORGOTTEN: Brian Carter and Jackie Dodds with the VE and VJ days book which cover Evenwood’s participation in the Second World War
EVENWOOD’s contribution to the Second World War effort has been documented in a new book.
Tomorrow Will Be a Better Day was produced by Evenwood and District History Society to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE and VJ days during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Along with documenting personal stories of people who fought in the war and those who supported the war effort, the book also shows how the village commemorated the significant anniversaries while restrictions where in place.

MAKING PLANS: Randolph community centre manager John Bogle paints the new Tardis-inspired book swap room for children
PLANS are in hand for Evenwood’s Randolph Community Centre to hit the ground running when it reopens to the public on May 17.
Along with its regular café and community group meetings, the centre is on course to introduce a wealth of new facilities not least of which is a new Dr Who Tardis-inspired facility for a kids’ book swap, which has been built by centre manager John Bogle and Esperley carpenter Bob Cooke.
Mr Bogle said: “We are putting coasters on the bottom and in the nice weather we will wheel it outside. We have already had book donations so it will be ready for our reopening.”

HAPPY TO HELP: Gordon Nicholson retrieves litter from the kerbside
EVENWOOD and surrounding villages of Ramshaw and Evenwood Gate are looking spick and span following a third litter pick in as many months.
In the latest village event about 40 people, including children, took to the streets to collect more than 70 bags of rubbish.
The initiative was started earlier this year by resident Ray Swainston along with Randolph Community Centre manager John Bogle after the problem was highlighted on the village’s Facebook page.
The initial litter pick attracted about three dozen people and 67 bags were collected.
Of the latest event Mr Bogle said: “We have picked up well over 200 bags of rubbish over the three litter picks. It just shows how much of a problem it is. Everyone had commented about how tidy and clean it is now.
