Deterioration of Downtown Topeka Post Office is visible to naked eye

The elevators don t work.
The glass in one door of the main entrance is cracked.
Three other doors at that entrance don t work. Each bears a sign that says Do Not Use!!!
Chipped paint mars the appearance of the ceiling inside the massive limestone structure where the post office has operated since 1933.
And that s just the decline visible to the public, which has limited access to the building.
Every time I enter, I marvel at the deterioration that I can see, said Grant Glenn, a board member for the Friends of the Free State Capitol Inc., which owns Constitution Hall across the street from the post office. ....

USPS official: Historic downtown Topeka post office no longer for sale

Downtown Topeka s iconic post office building on Kansas Avenue is no longer on the market.
After news in recent years that the United States Postal Service was looking to sell the building and that a bid from a potential mystery buyer had been accepted a postal service spokesperson told The Topeka Capital-Journal on Wednesday that USPS still owns the historic limestone structure at 424 S. Kansas Ave.
It is currently not for sale, the spokesperson said.
That announcement comes after news in early 2014 that the postal service wrote a letter to Topeka city officials, saying USPS would sell the building and its accompanying parking lot. ....

Group formed with mission of saving Menninger Clock Tower building

A group is being formed with the mission of saving Topeka s iconic Menninger Clock Tower building.
“We don’t want to see this piece of Kansas history erased,” Topekan Zach Haney, the group s organizer, said in a news release Thursday.
He encouraged anyone interested in helping save that building to go to the group s website at www.savemenningers.org or its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/savemenningers.
Haney said he was working with Emily Cowan from AbandonedKS.com on ideas.
The ultimate goal would be to find an investor who has the resources to fund a renovation of the building, he said. ....

Topeka leaders may be asked to let Menninger Clock Tower be torn down

Topeka s mayor and city council may be asked to authorize the demolition of the iconic Menninger Clock Tower building, a Topeka landmark standing on the former campus of the famed Menninger psychiatric clinic.
The Topeka Landmarks Commission voted 9-0 on Jan. 14 to reject an application for a demolition permit submitted by Colorado-based SCL Health, the owner of the property, which is just northeast of S.W. 6th and Wanamaker Road.
But Kansas law enables SCL to appeal that decision to Topeka s governing body, which consists of the city s mayor and council, said city planning director Bill Fiander.
SCL plans to appeal the Landmark Commission s vote if it is unable to find a viable partner to which to donate the building, said Nikki Sloup, its public information officer and vice president of system communications, on Monday. ....
