A Roanoke County judge last week ordered the Confederate statue near the Roanoke County Courthouse moved — or the courthouse moved.
This is a remarkable order on many levels beyond simply our ongoing reappraisal of what the Confederacy was all about and whether those associated with it should be honored.
Here’s the most remarkable thing of all: This appears to be the first time in Virginia that a judge has ordered a statue outside the courthouse removed. You could fairly call this unprecedented.

Virginia temporarily closes Catawba Hospital due to staffing crisis
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Virginia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services announced it closed admissions to five of the Commonwealth’s eight adult hospitals temporarily.
They are: Central State, Eastern State, Piedmont Geriatric, Western State and Catawba Hospitals.
Martha Hooker represents the Catawba area on the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors.
“It’s a care that needs to be delivered and give these people the dignity that they deserve in getting better,” Hooker. ....

Former President Donald Trump recently called the Republican governor of Arkansas a “RINO” — “Republican in name only” — because he disagreed with something that Asa Hutchinson had done.
Hutchinson joins a long list of Republicans whom Trump has branded as “RINOs” and an even longer list of other Republicans who have been called that.
Former Rep. Denver Riggleman of Nelson County got called that, even though he was endorsed by Trump (but did officiate at a same-sex wedding, which proved politically troublesome with 5th District Republicans who refused to renominate him).
Wyoming’s Liz Cheney has definitely been called RINO. As we comb through our archives, we find lots of Republicans who have been accused of being “Republicans in name only.” ....
