A plan to offer free admission at Rochester’s two outdoor public swimming pools this summer will face a decision Monday.
The Rochester City Council will be asked to approve $70,000 to eliminate the $4 and $5 fees for Silver Lake and Soldiers Field pools.
The proposal follows a council decision earlier this month to provide $45,000 to reopen and operate the Silver Lake facility for one more year. The funds will come from the council’s contingency fund, which has a balance of nearly $840,000 of the approximately $1 million set aside at the beginning of the year. ....

On Tuesday, the Rochester Park Board agreed with a City Council plan to pull the Silver Lake Pool out of the city budget scrap heap and operate it for one more year . at a cost of $95,000. And that doesn t include permanent fixes of the 43-year-old pool s many shortcomings. ....

Approval of a plan to fund another year of operations at the Silver Lake Park pool came with an added challenge Monday.
The
Rochester City Council unanimously approved spending $45,000 from its contingency funds for operations, while instructing the city’s Park Board to redirect $50,000 in improvement funds for needed repairs for startup.
“I think there’s a way here to use a couple funding options to make this manageable,” said council member Nick Campion.
The council went a step further and asked the Park Board to look at the potential for dropping fees at the city’s outdoor pools, suggesting the cost could be covered by a portion of the $17.5 million the city expects to receive through the federal American Rescue Plan. ....
