∫ The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education’s Facility Committee is recommending the district get a second opinion from a second architect about the scope of work needed for the roof at Pied Piper School.
District officials are currently working with Livonia-based architects OHM Advisors and construction manager Wolgast Construction to address heat loss from the building, which has led to some leaks in the school’s roof.
Committee Chairman Nick Brege told the AMA ESD Board of Education last week the committee started a list prioritizing some of the upcoming projects at Pied Piper School.
AMA ESD Superintendent Scott Reynolds told the committee he is considering a new facilities director position for the district. The position would lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the district’s facilities maintenance and operations. ....

SCHOOL BOARD ROUNDUP: APS approves contracts for work at Ella White | News, Sports, Jobs

∫ The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education approved nearly $6 million of contracts for work to begin at Ella White Elementary School. The approved contract work included about $1.3 million for the Spence Brothers, $626,050 in roof work from Great Lakes Roofing and Insulation, nearly $240,900 for L and L Contracting for ceiling and drywall work, $2.3 million in mechanical work to Johnson and Wood Mechanical, and $430,000 for John’s Electric to do electrical work.
The board also approved a $616,000 contract to Beyer Roofing Co. for roof work on Besser Elementary School.
The board also accepted a little over $14,050 in gifts during its February board meeting, which included a $12,000 donation from James Apsey, who donated the money from an IRA charitable rollover. ....

∫ The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education’s Property Committee recommends the board award an asbestos abatement contract to Total Environmental for the district’s asbestos abatement projects in the amount of $198,200.
The district will be doing asbestos abatement at Hinks, Besser, Ella White, Sanborn, and Wilson elementaries, the former Sunset Elementary School, and Central Office as part of the $33.9 million property tax voters approved in March. The majority of the asbestos abatement will be completed in the boiler rooms of the schools.
Total Environment is the lowest bidder for the project and is recommended over three other contractors who submitted bids for the project. ....

ROGERS CITY The recent listing of the Grambau Education Center has “derailed” the Presque Isle District Library’s plans to redevelop the historic building in Rogers City, library officials said on Wednesday.
The Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education on Monday decided it would list the Grambau Education Center with Traverse City-based Three West Commercial Real Estate Consultants for $500,000.
The library’s board of directors during a meeting on Wednesday verbally agreed it could not move forward in asking voters to support a property tax for the library to relocate to, and renovate, the building. ....
