Victoria-bred filmmaker Sean Horlor has Donald Trump to thank (or is it blame?) for his recent success at the largest documentary film festival in North America.
Someone Like Me, which the Vancouver-based Horlor, 40, co-wrote and co-directed with his partner, Steve J. Adams, snagged one of five Rogers Audience Award trophies and $10,000 in cash at Toronto’s Hot Docs festival on Sunday. The roots of the film about a group of LQBTQ Vancouverites who attempt to sponsor a queer refugee from Uganda date back to 2015, when Trump was positioning himself for a run at the U.S. presidency. ....

'Dear Future Children' takes top audience prize at Hot Docs film festival


As the winner, the Germany-U.K.-Austria co-production from filmmaker Franz Böhm now qualifies for next year’s documentary category at the Academy Awards without requiring a standard theatrical release.
Dear Future Children emerged the overall audience favourite as Hot Docs expanded its streaming availability outside Ontario for the first time this year, giving access to viewers across Canada due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other winners at this year’s festival included Fanny: The Right to Rock, one of five titles that each took home $10,000 for the Rogers Audience Award, which goes to the top Canadian films chosen by audience vote. ....

Svetlana Rodina and Laurent Stoop’s “Ostrov Lost Island” and Emanuel Licha’s “Zo Reken” took the top Hot Docs jury awards at a special online ceremony webcast from Toronto Friday night.
Eleven awards and $67,000 CAD ($55,200) in cash and prizes were presented to emerging and established Canadian and international filmmakers.
