Gilbert V. Indeglia is a retired associate justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and is chair of the Rhode Island Law Day Committee.
The United States is not a communist country. With that thought in mind, President Dwight Eisenhower designated May 1 as Law Day as a way of distinguishing our form of government from the socialists and their celebration of International Workers Day.  
He did so to recognize that our country is unique, in that it is governed by law and not by authoritarian rule. Every May 1 since then, the legal profession across the United States has been committed to teaching students of this important distinction. Here in Rhode Island, members of the Rhode Island Judiciary and the Rhode Island Bar Association have for many years volunteered on this day to visit local schools to meet with students and to explain the role we and the law play in securing ....

PROVIDENCE — A year after the state’s new collection agency began pursuing $29 million in 20-year-old traffic fines, it has recouped a little more than $367,000 — about 1.26 percent of the delinquent debt.
The old debts are holdovers from an embarrassing chapter in Rhode Island, when the former traffic court known as the Administrative Adjudication Court was so poorly run in the 1990s that thousands of unpaid tickets filled boxes stacked to the ceiling. ....
