Memorial established for 'Charlotte', the Sault's latest homicide victim (3 photos)


A couple of people were seen paying their respects at a makeshift memorial in the 100 block of James Street as police continue its investigation into the Sault’s latest homicide.
Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre General Manager Ron Sim says that he first saw Charlotte - the woman s surname isn t known at this time - come into the soup kitchen in January of last year.     
“I believe at that point she was fairly new to town, because she kept asking me where she could go for different things,” said Sim. “At that point, she didn’t live in the area - she must have lived somewhere, I believe, either on Gore or somewhere in that area, and then she ended up moving to Al’s place [Al’s Corner Pub] later in the year.” ....

Sault Ste. Marie Public Library is ending charging fines for overdue material after more than 100 years, saying financial penalties for late returns especially hurt disadvantaged groups with limited incomes.
The fines-free policy starts Aug. 31, the same day the library marks its 125th anniversary.

“We still expect people to take responsibility if they lose a book or if they damage a book they still have that responsibility of replacing it,” said chief executive officer Matthew MacDonald. “But they don’t have to be afraid of coming in a day or two late and having to pay a fine because they just had a difficult time coming down to the library for whatever reason to return the material.” ....
