FAIRMONT — As the West Virginia Legislature prepares to redistrict using 2020 census data, lawmakers also plan to eliminate its use of multi-member house districts.
The goal is to place each of the state’s 100 house delegates into 100 separate districts.
“The redistricting process is basically redrawing the lines of where these legislative districts are, what street they end on and where another begins and that process occurs after census data is obtained from the federal government,” said Democrat Del. Joey Garcia, one of three house delegates who represent Marion County in District 50.
Currently, all voters get to vote for three people and the top three vote recipients from that year’s general election are the ones who get to represent the district. In 2022, those three members will be broken into separate districts. ....

FAIRMONT — Sharon Lansdale, president and CEO of the Center for Rural Health Development, said former West Virginia Senator Roman Prezioso was an advocate for health care in West Virginia throughout his tenure in office.
She said he supported the organization when it was starting out as well as several of its initiatives to help rural West Virginians find access to health care.
“During Sen. Prezioso’s tenure at the legislature, he was always one person that was willing to listen and consider the issues any time we brought forth an issue,” Lansdale said. “We were starting back in the early 2000s a loan fund. Sen. Prezioso and others in the legislature really stepped up and said, ‘We need this in West Virginia.’” ....

FAIRMONT — The West Virginia Legislature is set to convene Feb. 10 and Marion County’s members are already evaluating issues that should be addressed in the coming session.
The 2020 session concluded just before the start of the coronavirus pandemic, so the representatives are looking at ways to improve the state’s shortcomings that were brought about by the pandemic.
Broadband internet access is a recurring topic in the legislature and will be tackled again in 2021.
“One thing we should all agree on is this pandemic has taught us that we are so far behind the curve on broadband internet services across West Virginia,” said Sen. Mike Caputo, D-13. “Children that had to do distance learning that live in certain parts of the state, and our district as well, had to go to parking lots to do homework, and that shouldn’t be like that in 2020. ....
