The COVID-19 pandemic may be winding down but it promises to have a lasting effect on the way certain things are done particularly when it comes to court proceedings.
On Thursday, David Meade (R-Stanford), Speaker Pro Tem for the Kentucky House of Representatives, and 83rd District Representative Josh Branscum (R-Russell Springs) visited the Pulaski County Detention Center to observe how the facility handles remote court proceedings as well as other protocols necessitated by the pandemic s onset in March 2020. ....

Governor signs bipartisan election bill

In a rare show of unity following a contentious 2021 General Assembly, Democrat Governor Andy Beshear was joined by legislative leaders from both parties Wednesday morning as he signed into law the bipartisan election measure shepherded through the legislature by Republican Secretary of State Michael Adams.
House Bill 574, delivered to the governor on March 30, gives Kentucky voters three days of no-excuse, early in-person voting including a Saturday before Election Day. It would allow counties to establish vote centers, where any voter in the county could vote regardless of precinct. It would maintain an online portal for Kentuckians to request a mail-in ballot but keep existing restrictions on who can vote by mail backing off from the temporar ....

Kentucky unemployment overpayments could be waived under new bills


“We have to pay all this back,” he told her.
She grabbed the letter from his hand, her heart sinking as she read.
Kentucky’s unemployment office had paid her husband, Roger, more than $4,200 in benefits last spring as COVID-19 first hit Kentucky.
Now, the state wanted it back.
The state’s unemployment office had determined her husband didn’t qualify for the 10 weeks of benefits it paid him, seemingly without issue, for March through May of last year.
“What are we going to do?” she thought.
She remembered watching Gov. Andy Beshear’s daily news conferences from her southeastern Kentucky home and how he said those who feared exposure to COVID-19 at work could apply for unemployment.   ....
