The flag flying over the bandstand during May is in honor of Lee Ademeit.
Lee enlisted in the Navy on August 8, 1962, in Des Moines and was then sent to San Diego, where he entered boot camp and then Radioman School. In June 1963, Lee was transferred to the communication center in Guam. There he served as a radioman, operating a teletype and the Morris Code; it was there that he was granted top-secret clearance. After 1 ½ years in Guam, he was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Hornet. During his time aboard the Hornet, he cruised to Seattle, the West Pacific, Vietnam, San Diego, Honolulu, Sasebo Japan, Olongapo Philippines, Hong Kong, the Sea of Japan, and the South China Sea off the Vietnam Coast. He was able to take his R & R in Sidney, Australia, while aboard the Hornet. He returned to Long Beach, California, in March 1966 and was honorably discharged on September 6, 1966. ....

Verna Bolibaugh, 82, of Oskaloosa, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Verna Jean Bolibaugh, daughter of Hiram and Fern Eva (Lockard) Walker, was born September 30, 1938, in Montezuma, Iowa.
The family moved to Oskaloosa when Verna was 15 years old. After graduation from Oskaloosa High School in 1956, Verna attended the Ottumwa Beauty School.
Verna joined Freda Taylor at Taylor’s East High Beauty Shop after earning her license. In 1965, Verna purchased the shop from Freda and continued to operate it until her retirement in the mid-2000s.
Verna married Donald Bolibaugh on April 28, 1963, at the First Assembly of God in Oskaloosa. ....

Duane Vance, 93, of Beacon, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021, while out for a morning walk in his neighborhood.
Frank “Duane” Vance, son of Huel and Carmella (Muraro) Vance, was born September 15, 1927, at the home of his parents in rural Tracy, Iowa.
Duane’s family moved to Davenport when he was a child, and it was there that he attended school. The family later returned to Mahaska County and settled in Beacon.
Duane married Blanche Julia Laud on April 23, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Beacon, and Duane began working for the Lost Creek Coal Company. When the mine closed, he went to work for Kaiser Corporation. In 1972, Duane and Blanche moved to Oskaloosa. Duane retired from Kaiser in 1989. In 2018, they moved back to Beacon. ....
