First concrete evidence for presence of Wolbachia in malaria-transmitting mosquitoes

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
Study raises hopes that bacteria used to control dengue virus may also help prevent malaria transmission
A bacteria that makes it harder for viruses to reproduce inside mosquitoes is also found naturally in mosquitoes that transmit malaria, according to a new study in Current Biology.
The study, conducted by an international team of researchers including from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), found high-density natural Wolbachia infections in Anopheles mosquito populations.
Excitingly, they also showed that two strains of this bacteria are maternally transmitted to following generations, and have genes that are associated with the ability to rapidly invade mosquito populations. ....

New free vaccination learning tools for schools

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
The new resource for schools aims to tackle misinformation and conspiracy theories around vaccines, and educate children about immunisation programmes.
The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine’s (LSHTM) Vaccine Confidence Project has worked with the Stephen Hawking Foundation to launch a schools programme to enable children and their families to make informed decisions about vaccinations.
The first in a series of teaching aids published today focusses on the COVID vaccine and tackles head on conspiracy theories that have led to limited uptake in some communities.
Immunisation programmes for children have seen a decline every year since 2013. Teachers and researchers say this is in part caused by confusing information and unfounded conspiracy theories about vaccines. ....

HPV-DNA testing most effective approach to detect cervical precancer among women living with HIV

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
Change of strategy could improve health of women living with HIV in the region
Screening women living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa for cervical precancer using a molecular test is much more accurate than traditional methods and could reduce costly and inconvenient procedures, according to new research published in PLoS Medicine.
The study, led by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in partnership with the University of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute in South Africa and Montpellier University in France was conducted among over 1,200 women living with HIV in two African countries, Burkina Faso and South Africa. ....

Self-testing trebles HIV testing rate amongst trans people in randomised trial

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
New research finds most sexual health services do not meet the needs of this community
HIV self-testing could reduce the time between HIV infection and HIV diagnosis amongst trans people when compared to standard testing services, suggests new research in EClinicalMedicine.
The project was a collaboration between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), University College London (UCL), and the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit. It involved more than 100 trans men and trans women in England and Wales, and is the largest HIV self-testing trial in this community to be reported.
Participants were first randomised into two groups, one was given one self-test for HIV, the other group was offered a link to find standard testing services, and no self-tests. Some of the self-testing arm were randomised a second time and offered either repeat self-testing (an additional self-test every three months) or ....
