PCUN | Hasta La Victoria…And Then Some! Sustaining the political power we gain and the change we can make with it

By Larry Kleinman

Hasta La Victoria” until victory! has long struck me as a valiant but incomplete slogan.  We gird and motivate ourselves to press on to the breakthrough…and then what?
Even as we savor a hard-won triumph, say in the electoral arena, our understanding of history and our gut feelings tell us that a whole new and different stage awaits us:  the
struggles of governing.
Simply put,
governing gives us the means to actually institute the change we advocate.  Naturally, we hope and intend that such changes will endure.  Therefore, we must also prepare to defend them against likely, if not inevitable backlash, even as we expand and deepen the changes so that they are truly ....

View Comments
It has been one year since the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, one year since an 8 minute and 46 second video of the encounter sparked international protests and a call, once again, for racial justice.
In Salem, those who have long sought equal treatment for people of color saw a spike in interest in achieving those changes. They participated in and sometimes insisted on   conversations and action within city councils, school boards, police departments and the state Legislature.
One year removed from Floyd s death, the Statesman Journal looks back on how the fight for racial equity and justice has developed, and what the road ahead may yet hold. ....

SALEM The Salem-Keizer School District will no longer contract with local police departments to station officers at district schools, Superintendent Christy Perry told the school board at a meeting Tuesday night.
The decision comes 10 months after activists and community members, led by youth group Latinos Unidos Siempre, began pushing the district to end its contracts, which stationed 11 police officers at middle and high schools across the district at the cost of about $1 million per year. They said the presence of officers made students of color feel unsafe and ....

The youth vote is one of the biggest what-ifs in American politics. The crucial 18-to-29 bracket typically doesn’t participate at levels comparable to groups over the age of 30, skewing national electoral profiles toward the older end of the spectrum. The 2020 election didn’t upend the trend, but surging youth turnout did send a crucial message to the Democratic Party, particularly on the issue of climate change: We care; now do something.  ....
