Taber Museum observes Black History Month with display | News, Sports, Jobs

The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society has on display several pieces of African art from the Turner-Wilburn Family Collection. The artworks span the collecting of three generations of the family and includes an African face mask, several sculptures possibly created by utilizing the natural form of a piece of wood, a statue of a young man in native garb, blowing a trumpet, and a hand-held drum roped with macrame-style braiding.
According to a news release, the artworks are featured in the lobby of the museum and can be viewed during normal operational hours at no charge. There is a charge to tour the rest of the museum. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays. ....

Erector Sets, collection of George Logue, given to the Taber Museum | News, Sports, Jobs

Many a young man woke on Christmas morning to find that Santa Claus had left an Erector Set for him under the Christmas tree. The young man’s imagination ran wild as he opened the wooden or later metal case with an array of girders, wheels, beams, nuts and bolts (and a motor!). His thoughts were in full bloom as he envisioned building a ferris wheel, a skyscraper, or a “robot.”
George Logue was one of those young men. Born Jan. 30, 1927, in Williamsport, Logue was the son of Dr. Joseph and Frances Baier Logue. As a young man, he received an Erector Set as a Christmas gift. In high school, he met another boy who had received a more elaborate set, creating even more possibilities for the two to envision and construct. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from Penn State in 1951, he began a career with International Harvester, Huntsville, Missouri, eventually becoming the head of research and development. Taber Museum to display 2nd Roesen painting | News, Sports, Jobs

The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society is acquiring another Severin Roesen painting. The painting has been loaned by Bobby Maguire in honor of his parents, Jim and Shirley Maguire, according to a news release.
It is Bobby Maguire’s intention to turn the loan into a permanent gift within the year.
“We are so thrilled to receive this loan from Mr. Maguire. His generosity and kindness is beyond measure thanks to him all of our visitors will be able to view the beauty of Roesen’s work,” said Gary Parks, museum director, according to a news release. “Many folks within Lycoming County appreciated his work but it was not until Jacqueline Kennedy outfitted the White House with two Roesens that his talent was more fully appreciated by our country.” ....

Taber Museum to reopen for touring on Jan. 5 | News, Sports, Jobs

WILLIAMSPORT- The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society will reopen to the public on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 for touring and research after closing on December 12, pursuant to Governor Wolf’s orders. The Taber Museum was recently voted the ‘Best Museum’ in the area by the readership of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.
The Museum is featuring a holiday exhibit entitled, “A Holiday Jewel Box at a County Gem: Quilts, Silver and Jade at the Taber”. The Community Room of the museum will shine and sparkle with the shimmering beauty of silver, the exotic splendor of jade, and the remarkably-intricate blending of fabric and lace in Wendy Etzel’s award-winning quilts. Several of the quilts feature depictions of homes on Millionaires’ Row as well as quilts that embrace the Christmas and winter celebrations, many of them incorporating the traditional colors of red and green.
