Overseas workers arriving from the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu will touch down in Brisbane tonight and quarantine in Grantham to provide âdesperateâ help to the agriculture industry struggling with severe labour shortages.
A representative from the Grantham Farmworkers Lodge confirmed 160 overseas seasonal workers were expected to arrive at the Grantham Farmworkers Lodge on Friday night.
FIP Group CEO Brad Seagrott also confirmed the workers would stay and work in Queensland once the 14-day quarantine was complete.
âWe are supporting the agricultural industry that are short on labour,â he said.
âA large percentage of them are (staying in the Lockyer) and they will all stay in Queensland, but our businesses is one of two that have people coming in on the plane.â ....

Construction commences on new 1000+ bed prison expansion

The $653 million expansion to the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre at Spring Creek is estimated to be completed in 2023, providing 1000 workers with employment throughout construction and creating more than 600 permanent jobs.
Simon Hughes, Project Director at John Holland, said at the Lockyer Valley Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Wednesday that the project would help address overcrowding in the Queensland prison and corrections system.

Council will be asking the Queensland Government why Lockyer Valley land owners were again left out of new land valuations when 25 local government areas will receive new valuations in March.
The announcement this month from the state resources department followed consultation with councils as well as local and industry stakeholder groups across Queensland, yet the Lockyer Valley council was not included in the Queensland Valuer-General s list for the New Year.

Vale Greg Steffens, 'icon' of Lockyer Valley community

THE Lockyer Valley community is mourning the loss of an icon after Greg Steffens passed away tragically this week at the age of 65.
Greg was a major figure in the Lockyer Valley across many decades, as owner and manager of Lockyer Valley Security Services.
He also played an integral role in community policing, having been a founding member of the Lockyer Valley Crime Stoppers Committee in the early 1990s.
Councillor Janice Holstein, Chairperson of Lockyer Valley Crime Stoppers worked closely with Greg in his position as Vice Chairperson of the committee.
She said she was still coming to terms with Greg s passing, describing it as a great loss to the Lockyer Valley community. ....
