Advocates for First Nations people with disability gave evidence at a public hearing into independent assessments on Tuesday, saying the imposition of the “culturally inappropriate” assessment model on Indigenous people would cause them trauma and distress. The Des Moines man who ran down and killed a local college professor with his truck has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for her murder. Jason Sassman, 50, was charged with first-degree murder and animal neglect after striking and killing Des Moines Area Community College professor Lauren Rice and her dog on April 5, 2020. Sassman, who police said had been using methamphetamine, reportedly thought Rice was a criminal with a gun about to kill someone when he jumped a curb in the 1700 block of Beaver Avenue, severed a utility pole, crossed the yards of several homes and struck her. After hitting Rice, Sassman continued driving until his truck broke down at the corner of Beaver Avenue and Hickman Road, then fled on foot until he was arrested a few blocks away, according to police. ....
