John Nalbandian looks forward to Tuesdays, when he can Zoom into a weekly bingo game hosted by the Lawrence Public Library.
It’s not the same as playing bingo in person, of course, but it’s a means of staying connected with others, the former Lawrence mayor said.
“I live alone. I’m widowed now, and so knowing that we’re going to do bingo on Tuesday at 4 o’clock, that’s nice for me,” he said.
Nalbandian said he enjoys being around people, but the pandemic has made that difficult. For him, participating in the weekly bingo game “is just one way of kind of maintaining contact.” ....

It’s early college high schools, the partnership between high schools and local higher education institutions that allows 11th- and 12th-graders — typically low-income, Black, and Latino students — to take free college courses and help them transition into college. The concept has been around for a few years, but it has now evolved into a state-funded, certified program that includes nearly 40 high schools and 19 colleges and universities serving almost 2,900 students as of last fall. ....

Local activist group Justice Matters will host a free virtual event on Martin Luther King Jr. Day aimed at bringing light to injustices in the community and how they can be combated.
Deacon Godsey, the co-president of Justice Matters, said the group hosted a series of listening sessions in the fall of 2020 where hundreds of community members gathered in Zoom meetings to talk about what issues and injustices they see in the Lawrence community. The Justice Matters event will discuss three of those injustices and provide evidence-based solutions.
The Zoom will cover the topics of homelessness, “racial disparities in discipline within Lawrence Public Schools” and “contributing to mass incarceration by misuse of the jail,” a press release stated.
