City Plans 'Friendly' Land Taking to Further Protect Haverhill's Drinking Water Supply

To protect the city’s drinking water supply, the Haverhill City Council voted Tuesday to take by eminent domain land on Groveland Bridge Road abutting the East Meadow River.
The Council agreed to the purchase the land several months ago, but there was a title issue, requiring a re-evaluation of the exact dimensions of the property. In doing so, another problem came to light. City Solicitor William D. Cox Jr. explained.
“So we were able to clear that discrepancy up and we came across another issue that state law and our charter prohibit us from purchasing real estate that exceeds 125 percent of the average assessed valuation over the preceding years, and that figure was only about $41,000 and the purchase price here is $272,000,” Cox said. ....

Haverhill School Committee Elects Wood as Vice Chairman; Reappoints Early to Whittier Tech Board

The Haverhill School Committee elected veteran member Scott W. Wood Jr. as its vice chairman during its annual reorganization Thursday.
Wood, who has served on the School Committee more than 17 years, was elected unanimously and succeeds Richard J. Rosa. Mayor James J. Fiorentini, who serves as chairman, congratulated Wood while commending Rosa for his service during a very challenging year.
“I’m very, very pleased that, for the first time in several years, our School Committee is united as we need to be in these times, and I look forward to working with you Scott. I really want to commend you attorney Richard Rosa. Thank you very much for a job well done,” the mayor said. ....

“Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself (full title),” published in 1845, is a graphic memoir depicting the cruelty of slavery as it existed in the South during the early 19th century. The account was all the more compelling because Douglass was a recent run-away slave who witnessed first-hand the actions he described. The slim volume was an immediate success, and it has become, deservedly, a classic on reading lists in schools and colleges today. I think that every American who wants to understand the ravages of slavery would be well advised to read it. ....

Lawrie Shabibi, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, has announced The Lacemaker by Farhad Ahrarnia (Jan. 20 – Mar. 4). It is the gallery’s opening exhibition of 2021, and the artist’s third solo at the gallery. Comprising images drawn from a diverse range of sources and media the internet, printed or painted material, and composed with embroidery, painted metalwork and grooming items the exhibition gives new insight into the Shiraz (Iran) and Sheffield (UK) based artist’s intriguing eclectic practice.
Role-playing and performance, the perception of surface and the notion that appearances are skin deep, are recurrent themes in Ahrarnia’s work, here expressed in four distinct groups of Embroideries. Haverhill Man, 25, Faces Drug Dealing Charges Following Arrest

A 25-year-old Haverhill man faces drug charges following his arrest Thursday night by Haverhill Police.
Paul M. Fagundes of 440 North Ave., Haverhill, was arrested just after 8 p.m. by Haverhill Police Detective Sean Harrison. Fagundes was charged with two counts of possession of drugs with intent to distribute and possession of a class B drug.
