ASKED to capture scenes of nature, it is not unusual for Ilkley Camera Club members to produce some top quality images. But last month’s nature competition saw a standard that particularly impressed visiting judge Monica Weller, a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. Top of the list was a stunning image by Larry James of a Kestrel feeding its young. Said Monica: “This image has everything. The action is typical of the animal, the colours are vibrant and exciting and the focusing is spot on.” Geoffrey Smith from Skipton took second place with a shot of a Sparrowhawk. “I know it is eating a pigeon, and we may be squeamish about that,” said Monica, “but it is natural behaviour and has been very well caught.” ....

Awarding second place, she praised three snowy scenes in a park taken by Len Downes from Hampsthwaite. ....
Here are three connections we have to that mission beyond âyour tax dollars at work.â First, when the rover was making its dramatic landing on Mars â scientists call the act of landing a spacecraft there âseven minutes of terrorâ â those signals were relayed through the Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory just up the road from us in Green Bank, West Virginia. The staff there knew the rover had landed safely even before those with NASA did. Second, the woman that viewers heard narrating the landing was flight controller Swati Mohan, who is in charge of guidance and controls for the Perseverance mission. She grew up in Fairfax County and credits one of her high school teachers with getting her interested in engineering. Two decades and a doctorate later, sheâs landing a machine on Mars. ....
