Mayor Daniel Biss embraced police reform and new efforts to address racial inequality in Evanston when he answered questions at Tuesday night’s Central Street Neighbors Association town hall meeting.
Resident Michael Hartnett said people who support defunding the police are essentially for police abolition, and he asked Biss to disavow such demands.
Biss said he favors redirecting funds to professionals, such as mental healthcare workers, who can take over emergency situations from the police, But he acknowledged that police are necessary for responding to certain dangerous public safety crises. ....

Letters May 21: Cats on the prowl; sleepless nights after Vic West arson

300 to 400 million! Think about it: that’s around one million per day, a billion every three years. Are there enough small birds in Canada to sustain this slaughter? I think that, at that rate, we would have run out of birds some years ago.
I recently read an article in the Guardian, called “Meaty meals and play stop cats killing wildlife,” about a scientific study done in the United Kingdom, the premise being to understand why some well-fed (but not all) housecats hunt.
Their estimate was that cats kill around 100 million animals annually in the U.K., of which 25 per cent are birds. Canada’s human population is about 55 per cent that of the U.K., so assuming that the cat and kill ratios are about the same, that would be about 14 million birds killed in Canada. ....

Letters April 28: Macdonald statue; value of music education

Macdonald belongs in Bastion Square
The John A. Macdonald statue, an excellent statue presentation of Canada’s first prime minister (and Victoria’s MP from 1875 to 1882) was removed from its location at Victoria City Hall and placed in some dark and dusty place in 2018 without any public input or public understanding of its relocation site.
Cathy Blackstock said, at a public session, that “it is important to make space for both sides of an issue, to avoid reducing figures, such as Macdonald, with one-dimensional ‘evil doers’.” In other words, there is much positiveness in the life of Macdonald, while on the other hand, some negative positioning. ....
