The City of Laredo announced the exact details for Stage 3 of its reopening process on Wednesday night.
Laredo City Council approved Monday the future reopening of the area which was set to take place over the next few weeks.
The most recent reopenings belong to benches and barbeque pits as well as basketball courts which are immediately available. The city still recommends gathering in limited groups for the former. Meanwhile, basketball courts are now open but in a limited capacity. ....

One year later, Laredo has finally started to see the light of the end of the tunnel as it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.
March 16 marked the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, and since that fateful day, Laredoans have experienced a year that could never have been imagined. Schools, parks and nonessential businesses were shuttered, and friends and families were forced to socially distance in respect to a deadly virus whose effects were not truly known at the time.
While much more is known about its spread and vaccines have begun to make their way into the arms of Laredoans, the physical and psychological effects of the virus and the resulting pandemic will be felt for many months, maybe years, into the future. ....

Officials pose questions to Majestic Realty ahead of TIRZ vote

Majestic Realty approached the Webb County Commissioners Court on Monday in the company’s pursuit of a public-private partnership with both the city and the county.
Their proposal is to create a tax increment reinvestment zone, or TIRZ, for Port Grande, a future master-planned 2,000-acre logistics park of warehouses and offices near mile marker 13 on I-35. This development, according to Majestic Realty, would create 9,000 jobs and bring in $41 million in revenue for the city and $27 million for the county over the 30-year term of the agreement.
The proposed TIRZ would set aside 55% of the developer’s new property taxes to the city and county until 2051. These funds would instead be reinvested into the infrastructure and public improvements needed in the development process, such as public roads, utility lines and street lighting.
