Wichita man gets prison for trying to smuggle drug-laced paper into Larned prison
LARNED – A Wichita man convicted of conspiring to send drug-soaked paper disguised as legal mail to inmates at the Larned Mental Health Correctional Facility was sentenced this week to 21 months in prison.
Shane Michael Slater, 38, appeared before Pawnee County District Court Judge Bruce Gatterman after previously entering a plea to one count of conspiracy to traffic controlled substances in a correctional facility, according to a release from the Pawnee County Attorney’s office.
The charge stemmed from an internal investigation by the Kansas Department of Corrections at the Larned Correctional Mental Health, which since 2017 has been a 330-bed unit for young adult male offenders rather than a mental health facility, though its name has not changed. ....

Leoti Masterson hasn’t seen her son, Jeff, since March. She used to visit him at the Winfield Correctional Facility once a week to play cards, reminisce and pray together, sometimes for hours at a time.
But when the pandemic started, Kansas prisons stopped allowing visitors as a coronavirus precaution. Now, Masterson makes do with daily phone calls no longer than 20 minutes.
“He’s my closest family member,” Masterson said. “So, yeah, this is hard.”
Yet suspending visits hasn’t kept the coronavirus from Kansas prisons. It was first detected at the Lansing Correctional Facility in early April. Cases have been found in staff and inmates at nearly every facility since. ....

KDHE shows 2,037 COVID-19 cases for Barton County


Great Bend schools
On Wednesday, Dec. 16, a student at Great Bend Middle School and a student at Eisenhower Elementary tested positive. There were no close contacts at either school requiring additional quarantines.
On Thursday, a student at Great Bend High School tested positive; 11 close contacts were traced. A staff member at GBHS tested positive and there were two close contacts. A student at GBMS tested positive and there were two close contacts.
Statewide
KDHE reports there have been 200,426 COVID-19 cases statewide as of 9 a.m. Friday. This resulted in 6,175 hospitalizations and 2,341 deaths. There were 5,857 new cases, 88 new deaths and 125 new hospitalizations reported since Wednesday, Dec. 16. There have been 730,380 negative tests. ....
