Officials and community mark Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day

U.S. announces recognition of historic tragedy on 106
th anniversary of its start
U.S. president Joe Biden’s historic declaration last Saturday that the Ottoman Empire’s systematic killing and deportation of 1.5 million Armenians in the early 20
th century was a genocide came just a few hours before Montreal-area Armenians gathered at the Armenian monument on the edge of Autoroute 440 in Laval to mark Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.
Official U.S. position
The mid-afternoon event drew not only people of all ages from the Armenian community, but also many elected officials from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
Biden’s declaration, which now reflects the official U.S. government position, came after five successive U.S. presidents danced for decades around the Armenian issue, while specifically avoiding use of the word “genocide.”

Berge development begins

A major milestone has been reached with the development of the Berge des baigneurs.
The city has awarded a $4 million contract to Mirabel-based Cusson-Morin Construction for the restoration and development of the riverbank north of Sainte-Rose Boulevard.
The major revitalization will create facilities that are better adapted to the mobility, safety and activity needs of visitors, as well as easier access to the site and the Rivière des Mille Îles.
The first phase of the major project to embellish the area and make it more accessible to residents will be marked by the renovation of the forecourt of the Sainte-Rose-de-Lima church and the parking lot near École Villemaire.

Laval marks organ donation week

Laval is throwing its support behind the campaign to increase organ donation awareness as part of National Organ and Tissue Donation Week.
All this week, Laval city hall will be illuminated in green, the color of the ribbon that represents the cause, and Mayor Marc Demers made a symbolic gesture by raising the flag in the image of the green ribbon at city hall.
In the pandemic context, organ donation is more important than ever, as it is a concrete life-saving measure: just one organ donation can save up to eight lives and can vastly improve the health of up to 20 people.

What's wrong with this picture? | The Laval News

While the City of Laval is currently in the midst of a campaign to promote how easy it supposedly is to report broken streetlights online or through a dedicated app, Laval city councillor for Vimont Michel Poissant sent in this ironic photo taken along des Laurentides Blvd. deflating the city’s claim somewhat.
According to Poissant, who is currently running for mayor in the November municipal elections, around 34 street lights on the overpass that takes des Laurentides Blvd. over Autoroute 440 have been broken for months, even though he claims to have reported them as have others living in his district.

Neighbours of vermin-infested duplex plead for help

Garbage piled to the ceiling in a Chomedey duplex. Books, magazines, food trays, decaying food, discarded packages, and more, filling chairs, tables, beds; some rooms are so stuffed you can’t walk through them.
The home, 904-906 Emerson Street, is an ideal place for roaches and rats to breed, and the pests made their way through walls into neighbors’ homes. Neighbors are awakened by rats scratching on the walls and scurrying in the ceiling of their living quarters. “Imagine having to live next to a place full of trash. That’s what we have had to deal with,” said Vicky Zannis, who lives in the adjacent duplex whose apartment is now infested with rats.

Italian Montreal: an exhibit in spaces

If you think you knew Italian Montreal, think again. A new exhibit at the Pointe-à-Callière Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History museum takes visitors on a journey through the story of one of Montreal’s most dynamic and enduring communities, in ways that bring daily life alive across generations, and introduces facts and links that many are likely unfamiliar with.
Some 280,000 Montrealers identify as having Italian roots, says exhibit project manager Samuel Moreau, who told
The Suburban that the exhibit had been visited for quite some time, pre-pandemic. Now that the museum is open to visitors, up to 100 people an hour, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a tour of Italian Montreal and through time.

A day of police thuggery: You've never lived 'til you've been manhandled by cops | City News

It started out as yet another ordinary coverage of another demo at a corner where I had covered three others in the past months. It was billed as “La Marche des Insoumis” the “March of the Rebellious.” Some 10,000 Montrealers turned out last Saturday to demonstrate against the masking of young children in schools and against the continuation of the lockdown. Clearly at least half had other agendas, but it was a legal demonstration well advertised weeks in advance.
It had been called for 1pm on a sunny, but bitingly cold day. I arrived early to go to my usual spot to film. It was a three foot high concrete bench at the southeast corner of Sherbrooke and McGill College. The bench was some 30 feet from where the marchers were gathering.
