For as much as cable networks have worked to improve the at-home sports viewing experience in recent years, there’s still nothing quite like traveling to your local stadium to see your hometown team play. But you do give up on things like play-by-play announcements when you make the trip. A company called Mixhalo wants to give sports fans the best of both worlds. The startup, which was co-founded by Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger, signed a deal this week with the Los Angeles Football Club to equip the team’s Banc of California Stadium with its wireless audio technology. ....

Happy Wednesday, everyone. Today is a big day, with MLS opening their free agency period and hosting its Waiver Draft, Concacaf Champions League will finalize its semifinals (with Atlanta United facing Club America, and Los Angeles Football Club playing Cruz Azul to see who joins Tigres and Olimpia), and there’s European league soccer in the afternoon. So, before all that, let’s catch up on yesterday.
Danny Hoesen from the San Jose Earthquakes was the 1st pick in the 2020 MLS Expansion Draft for newcomers Austin FC. The Anthony Precourt-owned team also drafted Jared Stroud (New York Red Bulls), Brady Scott (Nashville SC), Joe Corona (LA Galaxy), and Kamal Miller (Orlando City). Miller was immediately sent to the Montreal Impact for $225K in GAM and the 11th pick in the 2021 MLS Superdraft. D.C. Unitedescaped the draft without losing a player, meaning they will have to make players eligible for next year’s Expansion Draft. ....

Columbus Crew qualify for CONCACAF Champions League with MLS Cup title

The 2020 season has ended for the Columbus Crew as MLS Cup champions. A 3-0 win against the Seattle Sounders at MAPFRE Stadium was what the Crew needed to show the team’s intention to be a contender for years to come. An MLS Cup in just the second year under head coach Caleb Porter is the kickstart the Black & Gold showcases what this team plans to do in the future to be one of the best teams in Major League Soccer.
Outside of defending the MLS Cup in 2021, the Crew will play in the CONCACAF Champions League, an international tournament that crowns the best club team in the North America region, for the third time in club history. Columbus last played in this competition in 2010-11 when the team lost to Real Salt Lake in the quarterfinals. The season prior to that, the Crew appeared in its first CCL, making it to the quarterfinals and falling to Toluca 5-4 on aggregate. ....
