Power Outage Reported On Westside

Power was out in the Venice, Mar Vista area Wednesday morning. (Shutterstock)
MAR VISTA, CA About 45,000 people on the Westside lost power during rainy weather Wednesday morning, the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power reported.
A fire at one of the receiving stations nearby prompted the outage, the department said.

Firefighters were sent to the LADWP facility in the 1800 block of Centinela Avenue at 10:16 a.m. and extinguished the flames, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. No one was hurt.
The fire at our receiving station on #Westside is out, LADWP said via Twitter. No injuries. Limited damage. Crews are working now to switch circuits within station to begin restoring power. No estimated time of restoration at this point, but customers should slowly start coming back online soon. ....

ROCKRIDGE, CA The monumental power failure in Texas caused by unseasonable cold showed how extreme weather can push an electric grid to the brink.
The average U.S. power customer loses electricity for 1.5 to 2 hours annually even before extreme weather events are taken into account, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. As the Texas experience showed, hurricanes, snowstorms, heat waves and other extreme weather events can make such outages dramatically worse.
Customers in California state experienced 9.78 hours without power in 2019 5.08 more hours than the national average of 4.7 hours in 2019, which is the most recent information available, according to the EIA. ....
