(Adolphe Pierre-Louis/Journal) BELEN The young amateur boxers who fought in Sunday’s New Mexico Golden Gloves finals at the Belen Community Center should save their hand wraps for posterity. Those wraps were inspected, approved and autographed, after all, by a New Mexico boxing legend: Henry Anaya Sr. This year’s Golden Gloves reflected a changing of the guard, with many of the top amateurs from recent years having turned pro or simply having moved on from the sport. Based on Sunday’s action, there appears to be no shortage of developing talent. ....
Belen, Los Lunas claim team district wrestling titles The Los Lunas Tigers and Belen Eagles both secured boys wrestling district titles last weekend during their march to the state championships, which began on Thursday. Valencia also earned an individual district championship to complement nine-state qualifiers. Belen dominated the district 4A-5 meet, finishing with a team score of 241.5 to take the district title. Valencia, the host school, finished in second place with a score of 107. In total, the Eagles took home 11 individual district titles, winning in all but three weight classes. BHS didn’t have a wrestler finish outside of the top two. Marcus Rimorin, Julian Sisneros, Josiah Pemble, Peter Duran, Diego Avila, Ely Gutierrez, Damien Wood, Coleton Gonzalez, Gabriel Tharnish, Bobby Orona and Tregg Johnson all earned district titles for their efforts in their respective weight classes. ....

Eldorado’s bid to become an unlikely District 2-5A champion in both boys and girls basketball remained very much alive on Thursday night, as the Eagles swept La Cueva. At La Cueva, the Eldorado girls won 60-52, while at Eldorado, the Eagles posted a 69-64 victory. ...................... On Friday night, there is a doubleheader at Eldorado, with the Eagles and La Cueva’s girls having a rematch at 5:30 p.m., and Sandia’s boys following against Eldorado at 7 p.m. Fans are scheduled to return. ....
LOS LUNAS â Today, Earth Day, Jubilee at Los Lunas and Tree New Mexico have announced a new tree planting project in Los Lunas, thanks to a $75,000 grant from Facebook. More than 200 native trees and shrubs will be planted at Jubilee, which is located near Facebookâs Los Lunas Data Center. The neighborhood planting events will take place in fall 2021 and will be led by Tree New Mexico, under a grant it receives from the Urban & Community Forestry Program, New Mexico State Forestry Division. The trees will be planted by volunteers from the Los Lunas community, including Jubilee residents, Los Lunas High School and Valencia Master Gardeners. All participants will attend âPlant-a-Treeâ workshops, held by Tree New Mexico, to learn how to properly plant and care for trees. ....
