Navy Says Pearl Harbor Friday Fuel Leak Contained, Sheds Light on March 2020 Leak

A weekend fuel line leak of an estimated 100 gallons at Pearl Harbor has been contained, the Navy said. The latest marine diesel fuel leak occurred Friday, but Hawaiʻi Public Radio has learned of a larger fuel leak dating back to March 2020.
The state health department s Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response team worked on both fuel leaks at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. They were not previously disclosed to the public.
Responsible parties are urged to notify the public of their incidents and activities involving releases. If a petroleum spill creates an imminent health risk to the public, then DOH will issue a warning, the department told HPR. ....

HONOLULU (Tribune News Service) State environmental regulators said this week that the Navy has not proved it can safely operate its underground Red Hill fuel tanks, which in recent years have been the subject of mounting concerns over leaks and groundwater contamination.
The conclusion, submitted by the Hawaii Department of Health s Environmental Health Administration as part of a contested case hearing, raises the possibility that the state might deny the Navy a five-year permit to continue operating the facility. ....

U.S. military bases in Hawaii dumped more than half a million pounds of nitrate compounds toxic chemicals commonly found in wastewater treatment plants, fertilizers and explosives into the ocean in 2019, newly released federal data shows.
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam led with the release of 540,000 pounds, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s latest Toxic Release Inventory. The rest more than 86,000 pounds came from the U.S. Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. ....
