Alabama lawmakers pass bill requiring care for babies born alive after attempted abortions
Updated 10:09 PM;
The Alabama Legislature has passed a bill concerning the care for babies born alive after attempted abortions.
The bill says a doctor who attempts an abortion must provide the same level of care for a child who survives an abortion as a doctor would for any other child at birth.
Sen. Dan Roberts, R-Birmingham, who spoke for the bill in the Senate tonight, said the circumstances are rare but do occur.
Rep. Ginny Shaver, R-Centre, is the sponsor of the bill. Shaver, who first introduced the bill in 2019, said she has worked as a crisis pregnancy counselor. She said a woman she counseled told her that her child was born alive after an attempted abortion and that the doctor did not provide care and the baby died. ....

Today 8:00 AM
Alabamians struggling to find work or move on with their lives because of crimes committed long ago could soon be eligible to have convictions wiped from their records.
Gov. Kay Ivey last week signed the Redeemer Act, which will allow people with some nonviolent convictions to apply for expungement after they meet certain conditions.
“It gives people a fresh start, a second chance,” said Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison, D-Birmingham, the sponsor of the legislation. She estimated that tens of thousands of Alabamians could become eligible to have their convictions wiped away. The law goes into effect in July. ....

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama In July, a law will go into effect requiring medical examiners, through the appropriate law enforcement agency, to notify next of kin when keeping a person’s organs for purposes other than conducting a death investigation.
For Foley native and Robertsdale resident Donna Crooks Atkins, the law, recently signed by Gov. Kay Ivey, is a small victory in a well over decade-long fight sparked by her son Justin’s death at the age of 17.
“I never realized passing a law would be so amazing,” Atkins said. “I didn’t realize that I would have to fight every step of the way.” ....
