10,000 pieces: mom turns grief into joy


On May 6, laughter returned to Waterloo Park. It was the last piece of a 10,000-piece puzzle held together by the efforts of a community, local government and a grieving mother. 
More than a year ago, Sweet Home resident Rachel Maynard made several phone calls to Linn County Parks and Recreation. Waterloo Park had been repeatedly vandalized and there were holes in nearly every slide and the play structure was failing. Even the tunnel slide had to be removed, a blow to the Maynard boys, Zachary and William. who would sit at either end and yell through the tube. 
I called again and (Linn County Parks and Recreation Director) Brian (Carroll) got back to me and said, Why don t you get involved and help design the park?   ....

A former Lebanon police officer will serve back-to-back lifetime prison sentences for shooting and killing his former girlfriend and an Independence man in 2019.  
Brenton Wade Richmond, 50, was sentenced Thursday on two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Tammy Hopper and Erik Jacobs following a three-day hearing at the Linn County Expo Center in Albany.
He pleaded guilty to the crimes Jan. 12, which were lowered from aggravated murder charges. Two additional murder charges and a burglary charge were dropped as part of the agreement. He must serve 50 years before he s eligible for parole.  ....

James Plymell lies dead on a residential street in Albany, Oregon, after he had been repeatedly tased by Albany Police officers.

A couple of stray dogs were running loose in the parking lot of the Linn County fairgrounds just after 8 a.m. on Oct. 23, 2019, and Gerry Morris, a community service officer with the Albany Police Department in Oregon, was on his way to help round them up.
Morris turned onto a street that snakes past the blank-looking backs of stores and homes wedged next to railroad tracks. He noticed a beat-up silver Nissan Sentra stranded in the bike lane, partially blocking the road. A man with salt-and-pepper hair, who was wearing baggy gray sweatpants and a sleeveless blue shirt, was struggling to push it out of the way, but he didn’t appear to be making much progress. The dogs could wait. ....
