It’s spring 2021. It’s Friday at dusk. Gaggles of curious teenagers are gathering for an unfamiliar event designed to salvage a high school year that hardly was and pump an unaccustomed feeling into their final weeks as juniors and seniors joy.
Call it prom-ish.
In the early weekends of California’s phased reopening, teenagers, school leaders and perhaps most of all, parents, have seized on a sliver of an opportunity to try to make up for 14 months of missed dances, homecomings, sports award ceremonies and winter formals by mobilizing eleventh-hour proms like none before them.
Depending on the school, parking lots replaced fancy indoor venues. Promposals, the highly orchestrated ask for a date, were tame. The DJ’s music blast tended to waft into oblivion outdoors, which seemed OK because attempts at socially distanced dancing was a bit awkward. Lynwood Unified Makes Plans to Shift Campus Instruction to Address Lynwood High School Structural Concerns

Lynwood – In an effort to support student and staff safety, Lynwood Unified is planning to physically move instruction off Lynwood High School’s campus in 2021-22 as the District works to resolve structural issues discovered after exterior ceiling panels collapsed on campus in June 2020. The Board of Education discussed plans moving forward based on a staff facilities update and recommendation during a Jan. 24 special Board of Education meeting.
Students have been learning virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020. Following the breach in June, the District hired an engineering team to review the reliability of the school’s G Building, built in July 2000, and to determine the extent of repairs. First UC Berkeley announced last May that it wanted to disregard SAT and ACT test scores in admissions decisions for some students in a pilot study. The same day, University of California regents unanimously voted to phase out the tests over five years. After that, Caltech nixed them for at least two years. And in September, a California state judge ordered UC to immediately suspend all use of test scores in admissions.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic leveled its own hits upending the testing environment nationwide by severely limiting testing opportunities and prompting the massive California State University system and three-fourths of U.S. colleges to suspend testing requirements for fall 2021 applicants. ....
