Naicam developing first community plan since 1985


Following employment opportunities, respondents had written concerns for challenges with aging municipal infrastructure, low population growth, and lack of core retail services.
“It’s pretty common things in small towns right now, trying to keep commercial alive and keep the town viable,” said Leah Richardson, Naicam’s community enhancement co-ordinator, adding that once a community starts to lose people, it reduces the number of children, which in turns  affects how viable the school is.
This will be Naicam s first community plan since 1985. Richardson said their priorities have not remained the same since then.
“It was so out of date to the point where I don’t know what kind of community plan that was developed back then,” she said. ....

Willis Inducted into Phi Kappa Phi
Brayden Willis, of Pleasanton, has been initiated into the academic honor society, Phi Kappa Phi, while attending Berea College, a private liberal arts college in Berea, Kentucky.
Mola Receives Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship
Arthur Mola, Jr., a senior at Livermore High School who plans to study architecture at New York University, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Tracy Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Mola received the Chantay M. Murray memorial scholarship awarded in honor of deceased chapter members.
The sorority also awarded $2,000 general scholarships to Tracy seniors Leah Richardson and Daivid Akomah, who attend Kimball High School and West High School, respectively. ....

The Mojave River Valley Horsemen’s Association’s first show of 2021 featured an obstacle challenge held at Marjorie Coulter’s Ranch in Apple Valley in late February.
A hardy bunch of riders and handlers tackled the challenge, which left Judge Kathleen O’Malley with some tough decisions to make.
At the end of the day, Haley Samano, handling Second Hand Rose, took home the Mini Buckle, with Reserve going to Gina Cunningham and Jimmy.
In the Riding divisions, buckle winners were Stacie Sammuels, Beginner;  Penny Mooney, Intermediate; and Brandi Sammuels, Advanced. ....

The Day - 'Don't forget': Black Lives Matter group raises awareness in Groton - News from southeastern Connecticut


Groton  It was a small but spirited group that gathered on Saturday outside a Groton shopping center on Long Hill Road, waving to passing cars and holding Black Lives Matter banners while huddling together to stay warm.
It was a reminder, participants said, that the movement is alive and well and that the issues of systemic racism brought to the national spotlight following the death of George Floyd and other Black individuals are still around.
“Don’t forget, because we haven’t,” said Nanayaa Ali, 18, a senior at Fitch High School.
Ali is a member of the Groton Youth Collective, a fledgling youth activist organization that helped spearhead a protest last summer in Groton that drew close to 1,000 people in protest of police brutality and racism. ....
