Geoinformation and satellite data reveal increasing rate of global ice loss

A recent study by a team of researchers led by the University of Leeds in the U.K. has shown that the rate of global ice loss is rapidly speeding up. The first-of-its-kind study analyzed satellite Earth Observation data from 1994 to 2017 to reveal a 65% increase in the rate of ice loss during the period. A total of 31 trillion tons of ice was lost during the survey period, triggered by the warming of the atmosphere and oceans and melting of polar ice sheets. The survey covered 215,000 mountain glaciers spread all over the world, polar ice sheets and ice shelves in Greenland and Antarctica, and sea ice drifting around in the Arctic and Southern Oceans. ....

New images released by a father-and-son team have revealed the devastating impact that the climate crisis has had on Iceland s glaciers over the past 30 years.
Dr Kieran Baxter, a lecturer in communication design at the University of Dundee, replicated the photos taken by his father, landscape photographer Colin Baxter, while on a family vacation in 1989.
Side-by-side comparisons of the images show how dramatically the outlet glaciers of the Vatnajökull ice cap – FlaÌajoÌkull, HeinabergsjoÌkull, Hoffellsjokull, HoÌlarjoÌkull, and SkaftafellsjoÌkull – have receded in the south-east of Iceland. ....

Study after study has shown that Earth is losing its glacial and polar ice. Previous research has focussed on specific areas, from mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet to warming in the South Pole.

Study Finds Global Ice Loss Accelerating at Record Rate

The research, conducted by a team led by the University of Leeds and published in the journal
The Cryosphere, revealed that a total of twenty-eight trillion metric tons of ice was lost between 1994 and 2017.
In the 1990s, the planet’s ice was melting at a rate of about seven hundred sixty billion tons per year but in the 2010s, that figure surged 60 percent to an average of 1.2 trillion tons each year.
“The ice sheets are now following the worst-case climate warming scenarios set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,” lead author Thomas Slater, a research fellow at the University of Leeds’ Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, said in a statement. ....
