Health Departments Warn Outbreaks Are Happening Among School-Aged Kids

It’s linked to gatherings outside of school, like sporting events, parties, and sleepovers.
The Health Department of Northwest Michigan says it has seen 277 new cases of the novel coronavirus over the last 14 days; 30% of them were in kids age 13 to 19. And most of those cases showed no symptoms.
Benzie/Leelanau District Health Department also said on Thursday they were seeing an uptick of cases in their school districts.
And the Grand Traverse Co. Health Department said on Tuesday, “In Grand Traverse County we are seeing clusters that are related to social gatherings. Particularly social gatherings outside of school like sleepovers and other types of parties.” She adds that the clusters “are not related to school-related activities or exposure in the schools. So we want to make that clear.” ....

Covid cases fall as first case of UK variant detected Up North

Public health officials say the positivity rate, hospitalizations and new Covid cases are all trending downward.
Current cases are close to where they were before Covid spiked in northern Michigan last fall, says Munson’s Chief Medical Officer Christine Nefcy.
“For the last two days we’ve been below 5% [positivity] and we have not been there since October,” she says. “It’s really great news.”
There are more than 24,000 cases in the region and more than 622,000 cases in the state, as of Wednesday.
Munson has about half as many Covid patients as a month ago.
“I think the mitigation efforts that our local and state health departments put into place have been 100% effective,” Nefcy says. ....

BENZIE and LEELANAU COUNTY - The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department is reporting twelve new cases of COVID-19 reported in Benzie County and eleven new cases of COVID-19 reported in Leelanau County.
One Leelanau case was moved to another county’s judication and one case removed from Leelanau due to a duplicate case.
One new death was reported in Benzie County of a female in her 80’s.
Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department is expecting an initial allocation Pfizer vaccine this week and will be moving forward in partnership with counties and partner local health departments across the region to begin vaccinating EMS personnel and vaccination teams while hospital partners begin vaccinating their personnel. In addition, the department is actively working with key partners such as hospitals, physician organizations, and community partners ....
