today marks one year since 10 year old brie Asia Toral was reported missing. A statewide amber alert followed for months for the Davenport girl in March, fishermen found her body in a pond in Dewitt, about 20 miles north of Davenport. Five weeks later, Henry Dinkins was charged with her murder. He is her half brothers father and also a registered sex offender. New court documents unsealed. Just last week s show, authorities found an axe and cleaning supplies in dinkins trunk after Toral went missing. He is set to stand trial on February 14 over 100 miles away here in des Moines. Members of the community have done their very best to honor brie Asia Tarell over the last year and as Casey CS, kayla James tells us it s not something they plan on giving up ....

Johnston mothers of color create community in white school district

For Luana Nelson-Brown, navigating the predominately white Johnston School District as a Black mother of three had been a battlefield without an army.
Then she found her army.
A few weeks after Mother s Day a year ago, she, along with a handful of Black, Latina and white mothers found sisterhood while working for change in their children’s school district.
The advocacy is the center of the group, but the friendship is the glue that keeps us together,” Nelson-Brown, 51, said.
The group of mothers, which they ve named Johnston Parents for Equity and Anti-Racism, or J-PEAR, began with three founding members: Nelson-Brown, Bridget Neely, and Shalome Musigñac-Jordán. A few months later, Lya Williams, Madelyn Houser Webb, KT Menke, and Bridget Porto joined. ....

The Johnston Community School District officials do not conduct social media searches as part of their hiring processes, and will move forward with hiring a new director of equity, inclusion and belonging despite recent criticisms over his Facebook posts.
The conservative news site The Iowa Standard highlighted the posts from Louis Fountain, who would fill that director spot.
The posts, which have since been hidden, included tips for protestors over the summer, concerns about police actions and political comments, including one that read, On my next trip I m packing the ELECTORAL MAP, I will know where NOT to stop for gas, posted the day after E ....
