Louisiana Congressman Troy Carter pledged to serve with honor and integrity after he was officially sworn into office Tuesday.
Carter, a New Orleanian who won a special election to replace former District 2 U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, is Louisiana s only Democratic member of Congress. Carter left the state Senate for the promotion to Congress.

Louisiana s Legislative Black Caucus is requesting the removal of Republican state Rep. Ray Garofalo as chair of the House Education Committee after Garofalo s comments about slavery Tuesday went viral.
During debate over Garofalo s bill that would ban the teaching of systemic racism, known as critical race theory, the Chalmette representative indicated there may have been good components about slavery before quickly walking his comments back.
“If you are having a discussion on whatever the case may be, on slavery, then you can talk about everything dealing with slavery: the good, the bad, the ugly,” Garofalo said.
Republican Metairie Rep. Stephanie Hilferty immediately shot back: “There is no good to slavery though” and those in the committee room burst into laughter. ....

His suggestion was immediately dismissed by fellow GOP state Rep. Stephanie Hilferty.
Garofalo backs legislation that would prevent teaching that the US or Louisiana is systematically racist or sexist.
GOP state Rep. Ray Garofalo of Louisiana on Tuesday said that public schools and colleges should teach the good of slavery during discussions about race, as part of a bill that he proposed that would bar divisive concepts from classrooms.
Garofalo, who chairs the House Education Committee, said during a hearing on the bill, also known as HB 564, that his legislation sought to remove politics out of the classroom and cultivate a learning environment free of discrimination. ....
