While many are focused on weddings, drinking, and hosting festivities on sacred ground, there’s one man who seeks to memorialize these places of resilience, strength, and hope, despite the atrocities committed against so many of our ancestors: Kirk Brown.
As the founder and CEO of Melanin MeetUps, Brown launched The Better Together Project, a movement to end plantation glorification and tourism. Inspired by the literature of Ida B. ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. There’s now a new trail in Southeast Louisiana commemorating the 1811 Slave Revolt that began in Saint John the Baptist Parish. The trail tells the tale of what some call America’s first freedom march.
It can be easy to marvel at the manicured grounds of plantations in the River Parishes, but that singular focus could overlook the brutality once endured there.

LAPLACE, La. - Louisiana s River Parishes Tourist Commission (LARPTC) will commemorate the 210th anniversary of the 1811 Slave Revolt with the unveiling of a dedicated 10-mile trail that spans from the 1811 Kid Ory Historic House where the uprising began on the night of January 8, 1811, when up to 500 enslaved people took up arms in one of the largest slave revolts in U.S. history, to Destrehan Plantation. New Orleans native and world-renowned actor Wendell Pierce provides the voice talent for a dramatized audio account of the 1811 Slave Revolt. River parishes commission permanent alligator bonfire

Despite being unable to hold tonight’s annual bonfires on the levee due to COVID restrictions, the Louisiana River Parishes Tourist Commission enlisted a 50-foot bonfire alligator in hopes it will become a tourist attraction. Executive Director Buddy Boe said the gator goes by the name of Saint.
“We decided earlier in 2020 that we wanted to build a permanent structure and mascot for the river parishes that could remind visitors and locals throughout the year about our history,” said Boe.
Saint is a smaller version of the 78-foot alligator bonfire that was constructed last year and made headlines. Boe said Saint is a reminder of the bonfire custom that was extinguished this year due to high positivity rates of COVID. ....
