Researchers find possible cause for self-destructive immune system attacks in autoimmune diseases

Researchers find possible cause for self-destructive immune system attacks in autoimmune diseases
Autoimmune diseases, in which the body s own immune system attacks healthy tissue, can be life-threatening and can impact all organs. A research team at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has now found a possible cause for these self-destructive immune system attacks: a hyperactive RANK protein on the surface of B cells. The research opens the door to new therapeutic possibilities.
The immune system can be a mixed blessing: Usually it is highly effective in protecting the human organism against bacteria, viruses and mycosis and even cancer. But these defense cells can also turn against the body s own tissues and trigger autoimmune diseases, including for example rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, an illness involving chronic dermatitis and inflammation of the joints, the nervous system and internal organs or even become cancer cells themselves and dev ....

She bends over a canvas, painstakingly bringing colourful masterpieces of flowers and animals to life. Despite suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease that results in inflammation and tissue damage in the organs, and having to spend much of her life undergoing treatments in the hospital, 13-year-old Belle Chok has a steely determination as she completes her masterpiece which will be sold to raise funds for her medical treatment.
Whenever she is hospitalised at Selayang Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, her father, a plumbing contractor, has to pay thousands of ringgit in medical bills. The medicines that she needs on a daily basis also comes up to RM60 per day (RM1,800 monthly). ....

More Than 200,000 Americans Have Lupus

More Than 200,000 Americans Have Lupus
By Robert Preidt
HealthDay Reporter
THURSDAY, Jan. 21, 2021 (HealthDay News) Just over 200,000 Americans have the autoimmune disorder lupus, and minority women are at highest risk, according to a new study.
It s the first estimate of how widespread the disease is in the United States. The number comes close to reclassifying lupus as a rare disease, defined as an illness affecting 200,000 Americans or fewer, the researchers said.
Our study potentially redefines systemic lupus erythematosus as a rare disease in the United States and lays the groundwork for where we need to focus our efforts to reduce the burden of this disease on Americans, lead investigator Dr. Peter Izmirly said in a news release from NYU Langone Health in New York City. He s a rheumatologist and associate professor of medicine at the health system. ....

Autoimmune diseases are those diseases that occur when the immune system attacks its own tissues. Lupus is one such disease and can cause inflammation of the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs.
A study reveals that skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can worsen clinical symptoms in autoimmune diseases such as lupus, an unexpected insight.
Prior research has determined that sunlight exposure can trigger local skin inflammation, systemic flares, and kidney disease in up to 80 percent of lupus patients. The underlying mechanisms that drive this process are yet to be understood. ....
