I will remember the silence most of all. Visiting high school basketball gyms and hockey rinks in this winter of COVID-19 has been unlike anything I’ve experienced in nearly 35 years of Upper Valley media work. The sound of a raucous crowd, the loud music, the screeching shoes, slicing skates and bleating whistles were replaced by a relative quiet, the sporting arena reduced to a library missing only the person with a finger pressed to lips, requesting peace. ....

Special teams lift Mountaineers to semifinals

Special teams lift Mountaineers to semifinals
March 10, 2021BERLIN The Berlin-Gorham boys hockey team utilized three shorthanded goals en route to a 6-2 victory over the Plymouth-Kearsarge Cats this past Saturday at the Notre Dame Arena. The win catapults the Mountaineers into the semifinal round of the NHIAA Division III hockey playoffs to be played Wednesday, March 10, at Everett Arena in Concord against the Lebanon-Stevens-Mount Royal Red Raiders. The Mountaineers struggled against the Raiders this season, going 1-2-1 in four regular season matchups against them.
On Saturday, Brody Duquette would open the scoring in the first period as he streaked down the right wing side and entered the offensive zone before firing a seeing eye slapshot past Cats goaltender Gavin Garzia to give the Mountaineers a first period lead. Joanah Berthiume started the play by chipping the puck out of the defensive zone off the glass to find a streaking Duquette through the neutral zone. The ....

WEST LEBANON The Lebanon-Stevens-Mount Royal and Berlin-Gorham boys hockey teams will stage a schedule-closing rubber match in their four-game season series this weekend after skating to a 2-2 overtime tie at Campion Rink on Wednesday night.
The Mountaineers (11-1-1) haven’t lost since dropping a 3-1 decision to the Raiders (7-3-1) at Campion on Feb. 1. Berlin-Gorham leveled the set on Feb. 15 at Notre Dame Arena, 4-2.
Game No. 3 saw the Raiders hold and lose a pair of one-goal leads before settling for the deadlock. Lebanon got the early start at 2:45 of the opening period on Hunter Christian’s first goal of the season, which Berlin’s Michael Cote Jr. equalized exactly six minutes later. Aidan Yates had Lebanon on the path to victory, scoring his ninth of the campaign with 4:50 left in regulation, but the Mountaineers’ Carter Poulin struck with 100 ....

Local roundup: LSK girls hockey wins first on OT game-winner
Lena Nowell
Modified: 2/4/2021 2:41:39 PM
HOOKSETT, N.H. Emma Leute and Lena Nowell scored their first goals of the season, with Leute’s coming 3½ minutes into overtime to give the Lebanon-Stevens-Kearsarge girls hockey team a 2-1 win over Bishop Brady-Trinity-Manchester West on Wednesday at Tri-Town Arena.
The victory broke a four-game losing streak for the Raiders (1-4-0), who had the misfortune of running into NHIAA Division I juggernaut Hanover three times in the opening two weeks of the season.
Nowell scored unassisted on a power play to get Lebanon started late in the second period, and the Raiders were primed for a regulation win when the BBTW (0-5-0) tied the game with 22.3 seconds remaining on the clock. Leute finished it by driving home a Claire Falcone pass from the left circle at 3:30 of the extra session. Paige Hoegler backed it up with 21 saves in the Raiders’ net. ....
