PAHO donates over 60, 000 supplies to the Barbados Defence Force

PAHO donates to the Barbados Defence Force
The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) was recently on the receiving end of a donation of protective supplies by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
The donation comprised of 7,000 N95 masks, with 60,000 surgical masks and gowns each.
Dr Karen Polson, PAHO Advisor and COVID-19 Incident Manager, presented the supplies to Lieutenant Colonel Junior Browne during a ceremony at its Field Medical Team (FMT) facility.
Dr Polson stated that part of PAHO s mandate was to strengthen the capacity of organizations like the BDF [and] respond to any disasters or hazardous events.” She further explained that the contribution was in recognition of the BDF s support in the fight against COVID-19 and efforts in the aftermath of the La Soufriere volcano eruptions in St Vincent and the Grenadines. ....

Yet, this military man, who has been given the mammoth assignment of co-coordinating the vaccination of Barbados’ population against COVID-19, remains quite reserved about his achievements.
The high-ranking officer of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) paused his hectic schedule recently to speak to COVID Weekly about the COVID-19 vaccination programme which he leads along with Dr Elizabeth Ferdinand.
Interrupted several times by telephone calls, he responded to each with measured tones, before seamlessly resuming his interview. This, he explained, was typical of his daily routine, even before the logistical public health mission was added to his long list of tasks. ....

For months, Barbados avoided a major outbreak of Covid-19.
At the end of 2020, the island nation – with a population of about 287,000 people – had seen fewer than 350 cases, and only seven deaths, said Lieutenant Colonel Junior Browne of the Barbados Defense Force.
But then, tourist season started.
“With more people coming in, there was a greater chance of something happening, and that led to community spread eventually,” Browne said. ....
