Seasonal gates are opened in state recreational areas of Lewis County

LOWVILLE — State recreational area seasonal gates in Lewis County closed by winter have been opened by spring.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced that all seasonal access gates for the Croghan Tract, Oswegatchie and East Branch Fish Creek Conservation Easements and Watson’s East Triangle Wild Forest are now open for the public.
The recreation areas allow for multiple types of recreation activities.
Only Watson’s East Triangle Wild Forest is state-owned forest preserve land.
It consists of 13,229 acres of forested rolling hill terrain in the towns of Croghan, Diana, Watson and, in Herkimer County, Webb, just inside the Adirondack Park Blue Line. About 2,240 acres of the area are wetlands.

Lewis County DMV customers will soon 'take a number' again | Top Stories

LOWVILLE — By mid-May, no more appointments will be required for Lewis County residents needing the Department of Motor Vehicles’ services. As of May 17, they will be able to just show up, almost like before, but walk-ins still will not be accepted.
Some things will go “back to normal” with this change made by County Clerk Jake Moser, but capacity limits will mean it’s a normal with some adaptations.
The success of the “take-a-number” model the DMV has been using since its move to its current location has brought the number generator into this new normal.
The ticket system will be stationed outside of the door of the DMV beginning at 8:30 a.m. daily so that people can take a number to “get in line” as soon as they arrive.

Castorland home damaged by blaze

CASTORLAND — The first floor of a two-story home was severely damaged by fire Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Lewis County fire report on the incident, the home at 5475 Naumburg Lane had its second floor spared due to an interior attack on “heavy fire” by the Castorland Volunteer Fire Department.
The person that called 911 at about 2:30 p.m. said there was fire in the kitchen.
Owned by Jennifer Tabolt, the insured home also has significant damage to the back of the house, water damage throughout and fire, smoke and water damage to the family’s belongings.
The Castorland fire department was assisted by the New Bremen, Croghan, Beaver Falls and Lowville volunteer fire departments and the Beaver Falls Ambulance, although there were no injuries reported.

In 2014, mathematician Jordan Ellenberg examined the distribution of highlighted passages within Amazon Kindle books as an unscientific measure of how far the average reader gets through each book before throwing in
the towel. If the popular highlights are clustered densely near the start of a book, that s (arguably) a sign that many readers abandon the book before reading much farther.

Brick Block cleanup awaiting DEC, EPA input — bricks potentially contaminated

TURIN — Rubble from the recent Brick Block fire is attracting souvenir seekers and brick grabbers interested in making use of the materials still on the corner site.
Potential contaminants, however, pose a risk to those taking the bricks regardless of reason, causing the county to seek help from the Environmental Protection Agency to construct a site until further action can be planned to clean up the property.
Although part of the buildings were already in a state of disrepair and collapse, the historic Brick Block was destroyed in a massive blaze on April 1 that left only the brick faces of the buildings standing which heavy equipment was used to topple for safety purposes and to ensure the fire was completely out.

Drug Take Back Day set Saturday in Lowville, Lyons Falls

In cooperation with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, the United Prevention Coalition of Lewis County is sponsoring a National Prescription Take Back Drug Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
There will be two drive-thru drop-off locations — at the Lowville Fire Hall and the Lyons Falls Gym parking lot. Community members are encouraged to drive up and drop off any unused or expired medications and in return receive a goodie bag sponsored by many agencies and nonprofits in Lewis County.
“Recent data shows that 22 percent of Lewis County residents are throwing expired medication in the trash and 23 percent of them also stated they are flushing medications,” Coalition Coordinator Cassie Forbus said. “Having a Take Back Drug Day keeps medications out of the hands of the youth as well as saves our landfills and water supply.”

Lewis County residents invited to shine a light on mental health in their rural community

LOWVILLE — As most people in the north country know, small town and country living is very different from that in cities. A research group from the Albany School of Public Health wants to learn about the relationship between those unique circumstances and stressors, mental health and the unusually high rates of suicide in many rural areas.
That likely means the stressors that cost us mentally and emotionally are different, too.
Led by Brett R. Harris, who has a doctorate in public health and has been working in substance abuse for the past 11 years in state agencies, the four-person team designed a “listening tour” in late 2019 and began implementing it in 2020 by visiting rural counties across the state both in person and, as it became necessary due to COVID-19, virtually.

Actor Damian Lewis penned a touching note to his late beloved wife Helen McCrory, who passed away this week at the age of 52.
In an emotional tribute written to
The Sunday Times, the
Billions star spoke about his “brilliant” wife, who passed away after a battle with cancer.
Many people have spoken about her career and many more will, so that s where I ll leave it, because it strikes me that two things are happening this weekend: an outpouring of grief and shock, and a celebration of Helen McCrory the actress from fans everywhere, and of Helen the person, Lewis said of the actress.
