LEWISTON The Lewiston-Auburn Optimist Club seeks volunteers to spend at least one hour walking their neighborhood with family or friends and a trash bag, to clear roadside trash, on Earth Day (Thursday, April 22).
Contributing restaurants include Longhorn Steak House, Buffalo Wild Wings, Heidi’s, I Hop, Roys and the Holy Donut. If Earth Day is not a convenient day for volunteer trash pickup, Saturday, April 24, can be a back-up date. Call or email to register to win one of the 26 gift certificates to be given to community volunteers.

AUBURN The Lewiston-Auburn Optimist Club has announced this year’s winners of its local essay contest.
Max Kim of Westport, Connecticut, took first place. Second place was Jesse Ding from Wilmington, Massachusetts. Third place was Isabella Webster from St. Dominic Academy in Auburn.
“Reaching your Dreams by Choosing Optimism” was this year’s national topic.

Free Fishing License Week opens Feb. 13
AUGUSTA Free Fishing License Week – Saturday, Feb. 13, to Sunday, Feb. 21 – was created to give everyone a chance to try ice fishing.
On these days, any person (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked) who registers with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife may fish without a license. All other laws and regulations apply on these days. Nonresidents and residents may participate.
Those who plan to participate in the Free Fishing License Week must register online. Ages 15 and younger do not need to register.
